What Kind of Doctor is a Vein Specialist?
What kind of doctor is a vein specialist?
Phlebology is the branch of medicine concerned with vein care and vascular problems. As such, vein specialists are known as “phlebologists,” and they’re primarily concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of vein problems, such as spider veins, varicose veins, restless leg syndrome, deep vein thrombosis, and chronic venous insufficiency.
Vein doctors can have backgrounds in all fields of medicine, such as anesthesiology, dermatology, cardiology, etc., but they must have advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of vein conditions, preferably in the form of residency programs and fellowships in minimally invasive vein treatments.
Our state-of-the-art vein treatment clinics in New Jersey are led by some of the most talented, board-certified, Harvard-trained vein doctors. Our vein doctors specialize in the latest minimally invasive spider vein and varicose vein treatments and maintain a perfect track record. Please contact them to explore your vein treatment options.
When should I see a vascular specialist?
You should consult a vascular specialist if you have any vein-related problems. Most vein problems are caused by underlying chronic venous insufficiency, a medical condition wherein the collapse of vein valves leads to the accumulation of blood in leg veins. The continued accumulation of blood in leg veins leads to vascular dilation, poor blood circulation, and weakening vein walls, which, in turn, leads to numerous symptoms and complications.
The following are the signs and symptoms indicating it’s time to see a vascular specialist:
- Spider Veins: These are dense clusters of reddish blood vessels visible just underneath the skin’s surface. They may appear on the face, feet, legs, or other parts of the body.
- Varicose Veins: These are large veins that protrude out of the skin’s surface in a twisted, tangled, and knotted mass. They often appear on the lower extremities of the body.
- Restless Leg Syndrome: This is a condition wherein you have an urgent need to shake and move your legs, with increasing intensities at the end of the day.
- Frequent Leg Cramps: Leg cramps lead to sudden, involuntary muscle spasms and contractions. Vein disease increases the frequency of leg cramps, especially at night.
- Leg Heaviness: The accumulation of blood in leg veins due to chronic venous insufficiency leads to leg heaviness and exhaustion.
- Leg Swelling: The accumulation of blood in leg veins and the lower extremities also leads to fluid accumulation (edema), which leads to leg swelling.
- Skin Discoloration: The lack of proper blood circulation leads to skin discoloration in the legs.
- Leg Ulcers: The lack of proper blood circulation prevents wounds from healing properly, leading to non-healing wounds, also known as ulcers.
Deep Vein Thrombosis: This is a dangerous condition wherein blood clots form within the leg veins. These blood clots can break away and travel to the lungs, leading to a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism.
What can I expect at a vein consultation?
Each vein treatment clinic has its own set of protocols for vein consultations. Some vein doctors merely glimpse at your spider veins before recommending a cosmetic treatment plan — you should generally avoid such vein doctors. However, our vein doctors provide thorough and comprehensive vein consultations to identify the root cause of your concerns and curate a personalized vein treatment plan.
During your vein consultation, your vein doctor will examine your leg veins, including your spider veins and varicose veins. They will also look for other signs of vein disease, such as skin discoloration and leg ulcers. You’ll be asked to describe all of your symptoms, such as leg heaviness, restless leg syndrome, and leg cramps. The vein doctor will also review your medical history to determine if you have a high risk of vein disease.
After the vein consultation, the vein doctor will administer an ultrasound diagnostic test called duplex ultrasound. During this test, the vein doctor will move an ultrasound handheld device over your legs to visualize the blood flow in your leg veins on a computer screen. This will reveal the direction of blood flow in your legs, thereby confirming if you have underlying chronic venous insufficiency.
After the diagnosis, the vein doctor will curate a personalized vein treatment plan for you. They will select the ideal vein treatments based on the location and size of your spider veins and varicose veins, underlying vein disease, insurance coverage options, cosmetic goals, and other factors. We select the ideal vein treatments to address the root cause of your vein problems, ensure long-lasting results and minimize the risk of harsh side effects.

Is sclerotherapy considered a surgery?
No. Sclerotherapy is not considered a surgical procedure. It’s a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure performed within the vein doctor’s office. The vein doctor will inject a sclerosant solution into your spider veins — one injection per spider vein. The sclerosant medicine will seal the spider veins’ walls, turning them into hardened scar tissues eventually absorbed by the body. The spider veins will gradually fade away from the skin’s surface in a few weeks.
How bad does sclerotherapy hurt?
Sclerotherapy is a fairly painless procedure. You might experience a mild cramping and burning sensation when the sclerosant fluid enters your spider veins, but the sensation is extremely brief. You may experience mild swelling, tenderness, and itching after spider veins, but you can resume your daily activities and work immediately.
Why do my veins look worse after sclerotherapy?
Your veins may look worse after sclerotherapy because the sclerosant medicine will turn the spider veins into hardened scar tissues; this will make them appear prominently on your skin. However, your body will eventually metabolize the spider veins, making them fade away from your skin.
